In 1901, Daniel O “D.O.”
Teasley wrote a beautiful song called “Back to the blessed old
Bible”. It was written during a time of spiritual rediscovery. Many
were forsaking their denominations and sects, the traditions of men
and false doctrine. They were finding their way back to the
simplicity of the scriptures. They were going back to the beginning
and rediscovering Christ, who had been lost sight of in the maze of
religion confusion.
A verse and the chorus of this song are provided below:
Back to the blessed old Bible,
Back at the Master’s call,
Back to the words of our Savior,
Loving, obeying them all.
Never in sects to be scattered,
Never again to do wrong;
Unity, holiness, heaven,
Ever shall be our song.
Back to the blessed old Bible,
Back to the light of its word;
Be on our banners forever:
“Holiness unto the Lord.”
Today’s church has fallen back into the same spiritual condition
that existed just prior to the writing of this song. Men are more
content with tradition than with truth. They look more to man than
to Christ. They lift up man’s Institutional creation higher than the
Creator. They stopped seeking and they started settling.
Maybe it is time to change the words to this old song. In some
places, it would certainly be more befitting.
SMACK !!! ... to the blessed old Bible,
Back at the Pastor's call,
SMACK !!! ... to the words of the Savior,
Picking and choosing them all.
Truth, we reject to be flattered
Trying to all get along.
Give us tradition and leaven
Who cares if we are wrong?
SMACK !!! ... to the blessed old Bible,
SMACK !!! ... to the light of its word;
Be on our banner forever:
'ICHABOD*
HERE IS PREFERRED'
*Ichabod
means "the
glory is departed"
