2007 Sunday Evening
Sunday evening Bro
Joe Coons spoke on the subject “We are what we think about”. Using many
scriptures he exhorted us to “think on good things”, and not to think
evil, especially not to be quick to think evil of fellow brothers and
sisters in Christ. As Christians we must be careful what direction we
allow our thoughts to go. While we cannot help the thoughts that enter
our mind, we must be faithful to “cast down imaginations…and bring into
captivity every thought” (2 Cor 10:5). Through Christ, we can even
conquer thought patterns that have a strong hold on us (2 Cor 10:4).
The mind has been compared to a garden path. The more you roll a
wheelbarrow down the path, the deeper the ruts it is going to make in
the dirt. Pretty soon, the wheelbarrow will automatically seek out the
rut without much effort and it will be harder to get it up out of the
rut when you want to. But with extra effort (and maybe a little help
from others), we can move the wheelbarrow and seek out another path to
follow. After awhile, the old ruts will fill in and smooth over…if you
keep the wheelbarrow away. Likewise, while it isn’t easy to conquer
habitual thought patterns, it can be done with determination, God’s
help, and maybe help from others. Christ is able to “renew our minds”
(Rom 12:2) when we endeavor to keep them in tune with Him.
