Meeting Report Oct 1, 2006:
Sis. Joanne Coons led in a
discussion about the anointing of Christ, taken from Luke Chapter 7.
Once again the Spirit of God was present to teach us from His Word as we
discussed several points we had never before considered.
In this passage, we see Simon, a Pharisee, desiring Jesus to come to his
house. (Typically, the Pharisees were the most devout and strictest
members of the Jewish race.) During the party, a woman with an immoral
reputation enters and begins to wash Jesus’ feet. What was she doing,
touching Jesus this way? How appalling – at least from Simon’s point of
view. All this was going on in his house. What was everyone going to
think of Him? He was going to be tainted by association, or at least
his reputation would be.
But Jesus looked beyond her faults and saw the need of this woman’s
heart. She was seeking help, and because she came to the right person
with a humble, sorrowful attitude, she got her need met. Simon, on the
other hand, had a need as well although he wasn’t aware of it. His need
was spiritual pride. He was more worried about himself than the woman
finding help. We can’t guarantee that he ever got his need met.
How careful we should be as professing Christians that we don’t get such
an attitude that we are better than someone else because we are obeying
all the rules. Too many times, like Simon, we want to be associated
with Jesus and have him be numbered as our friend, yet we aren’t willing
to reach out to those “beneath” us for fear of our reputation being
tainted. That is spiritual pride and that is wrong. Let’s be careful
of our attitude. When we keep people at arm’s length, how are they
going to get the help they need? Jesus made himself of “no reputation”
and went where the sinners were. He got his “hands dirty” so to speak.
Where would Jesus go to help souls today? Where are the real needs:
the church house? The mall? The Christian bookstore? The streets?
Bars? The beach? Something to think about. May our light shine in the
right place.

Broken And Spilled Out
Bill George / Gloria Gaither
Verse
One day a plain village woman
Driven by love for her Lord
Recklessly poured out a valuable essence
Disregarding the scorn
And once it was broken and spilled out
A fragrance filled all the room
Like a pris'ner released from his shackles
Like a spirit set free from the tomb
Chorus
Broken and spilled out
Just for love of You Jesus
My own precious treasure
Lavished on Thee
Broken and spilled out
And poured at Your feet
In sweet abandon
Let me be spilled out
And used up for Thee
Verse
Lord You were God's precious treasure
His loved and His own perfect Son
Sent here to show me
The love of the Father
Yes just for love it was done
And though You were perfect and holy
You gave up Yourself willingly
And You spared no expense for my pardon
You were spilled out and wasted for me
Chorus
Broken and spilled out
Just for love of me Jesus
God's most precious treasure
Lavished on me
You were broken and spilled out
And poured at my feet
In sweet abandon Lord
You were spilled out and used up for me
