Man's Churches

Pastor Heads

Claims to be one body (one church, but with two heads, the Pope and Christ.

Many denominational bodies (churches) with many Heads of those bodies.

Many congregations with the Pastor as the operating Head of each assembly. All claim Christ as the universal Head of the church, but look solely to the Pastor as the local Head.

Question: What do you do with the Husband being the leader of the home since the church and family go hand in hand and you do not believe that the Pastor is the local Head of the church?

Answer: First of all, let us clearly state that we believe that the head of the home is the husband. He is the head of the wife and of the children. Eph 5 makes this abundantly clear. We also agree that Christ makes the comparison of the relationship between the husband/wife to that of Christ/the church.

Therefore, we must ask ourselves what comparison was Paul making in Eph 5 and 1 Cor 11:3? Let us read:

Eph 5:22-32  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

1 Cor 11:3  But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

We immediately notice that no mention is made of a pastor in either of these texts. There is also no mention of elders in either of these texts. Why? Because neither the Pastor nor elders are the head of the church, whether it be the church universal or locally assembled. They are not in the spiritual headship line. In God’s church, there is but one body and one head and each member is connected directly to the Head. This Head is Christ, and He alone. Colossians 1:18 And he {Christ} is the head of the body, the church... that in all things he might have the preeminence.

In a properly functioning home, the husband works closely with the wife in guiding the home. He is not to be a dictator or tyrant, but he is to be sensitive to the needs and desires of the wife. He is to love his wife as his own body. In return, the wife is to be subject unto her own husband. This is the formula for a successful marriage.

Likewise, Paul made the comparison of the husband and wife to Christ and the church. So, we must ask ourselves, who is the bride and who is the husband that Paul spoke of? Let the scriptures answer for us:

Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

Rev 21:2, 9-10  And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband … Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.

Heb 12:22-23  But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem… to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven.

From these scriptures, we conclude that the church is the bride of Christ. She is the wife, and Christ is her husband. As her loving husband who gave himself for the bride, He is her sole head and she is submissive to Him.

The church is also represented as the “body of Christ”. Col 1:18  And he {Christ} is the head of the body, the church. The scriptures clearly teach that Jesus is married to only one bride and that He only has one body. “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.” –1 Cor 12:12

Therefore, the Head of every local congregation must be the same Head of the universal church, as a local congregation is a representation of the universal church. With Christ as the only Head of the body, both universally and locally, we all are contributing members and the governing of the body rests on His shoulders. If a body has multiple heads, it ceases to be a normal person and instead we might label it a monster. Likewise, if a head has multiple bodies, it too could be properly called monster. If the local assembly of the church has multiple heads, i.e., Christ and the Pastor, it is not a church but is rather a multi headed “monster”.

To summarize, we believe that Christ is the only head of the church and that He is well equipped to govern His bride as she lovingly submits to His will. He does not need to share his Headship with any man or group of men.

Dirty ole devil has a church, ee-eye, ee-eye oh.
and in that church, he has church heads, ee-eye, ee-eye oh.

With a head head here, and a head head there,
here a head, there a head, everywhere a church head.

Dirty ole devil has a church, ee-eye, ee-eye oh.

God's true church just has one Head, ee-eye, ee-eye oh.
and Praise the Lord that Head's not dead, ee-eye, ee-eye oh.

No man-rule here, No man-rule there,
here a rule, there a rule, everywhere a new rule.

God's true church just has one Head, ee-eye, ee-eye oh
