Sunday Evening, April 18, 2010,
This
evening, we discussed the book of Psalms. This book, made up of 150
individual poems and songs, was mostly written by David, a man after
God's own heart. Despite his faults and failures, David found
repentance and his writings are an inspiration to every Christian.
He is a person who made the most of a very bad situation.
We
primarily focused on the first three verses of chapter one.
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the
ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the
seat of the scornful.
But
his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he
meditate day and night.
And
he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that
bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not
wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Bro
Dillow gave some very needed direction regarding these verses. These
verses portray some "do's and don'ts", but in a positive way.
We discussed how it is needful for to get godly counsel, rather than
counsel from the world or even well meaning people. It is also
necessary that we not stand in the way of a sinner's salvation by
our actions and words. Finally, from verse one, we never want to be
scoffers or scornful towards others,
i.e., to hold contempt or disdain felt toward a person. No one likes
to be around negative people.
It is
necessary to stay in the word of God for it has been said that seven
days with reading the Bible makes one weak (or Bro Joe suggested
tonight, "fourteen days makes one too weak". Leave it to Bro Joe!
:o) We need to "read, delight and meditate" on the Scriptures.
The
third verse talks about a tree being planted by the water. Bro
Dillow explained the different kinds of root systems that trees
have. Some only have shallow or surface level roots. These trees
usually topple over during a storm. But other trees have a central
tap root that goes down deep to the water table and provides needful
nutrients and stability to the tree. This is the kind of tree that
God is calling us to be. He is wanting us to be evergreen trees and
our fruit is to be that of righteousness and holiness.
It was a
great lesson and the end of a wonderful day in the Lord.
