Sunday Morning, June 29, 2008,
This morning, Bro Joe brought a lesson about
two brothers…twins…opposites…competitors…a coveted birthright…a
stolen blessing. These are all familiar aspects of the Jacob/Esau
story found in Genesis 25. More than a good story, these examples
from the Old Testament were written for our admonition and
learning. The birthright during this time was the eldest son’s
inheritance, but carried along with it the responsibility of leading
the family in the ways of God. To flippantly cast this away took
extreme ignorance, and a quick decision. The lesson God wants us to
gather from this story is the importance of our spiritual
inheritance (eternal life with Christ). We must never get careless
and take it lightly for when we do, we are liable to cast it aside
just as Esau did. No birthright, no blessing. Value your birthright
for the treasure it really is. It is of great price – costing the
death of God’s son.
