The above
cartoon was meant to be a funny illustration of the sectarian
thinking of many people today. Sadly, it represents the mindset of
more people then we might care to admit. Recently, two of the saints
were told by members of two separate churches that Springfield, Ohio, a city with a population of over
70,000 people, was only big enough for one church. Of course, in
their minds, that
“one church” was "their church". Sad thing is that neither "church"
will have anything to do with the other because both see themselves
as being "IT". And if your "IT", no one else can be "IT".
The Bible
teaches us that every born again believer is a member of God’s
church. Salvation makes you a member of this universal church.
Indeed there is only one church and that is God’s church, which is
headed up by Jesus Christ.
When people
begin to look here or look there at a particular building or a
numbered group of people and call that the “Church”, they seriously
depart from sound scriptural teaching. Jesus said that the kingdom
of God does not come with physical observation but rather the
kingdom of God resides within us. People who are saved from sin and
walking in obedience to God’s Word make up the church.
In reality,
God would have His people be free from all of man’s churches and be
directly connected to Jesus Christ, the Head. If everyone who is
truly saved would come out of all institutionalized churches, with
their man-made creeds and traditions, and let Christ be the Head, God’s people would indeed be
united in one body. |
